During Tokyo’s annual design and art festival DESIGNART, Artek Tokyo launches the new Kiulu Bench designed by Koichi Futatsumata. Under the theme “Landscape of Design”, the store shows an installation by the Japanese designer from 16 October until 18 November, where the multifunctional Kiulu Bench can be experienced in several settings of everyday life. A window animation of Kiulu Bench with a backdrop of Finnish landscapes taken by photographer Nao Tsuda is also part of the display.

Kiulu Bench was premiered during Milan Design Week as part Artek’s FIN/JPN Friendship Collection, celebrating 100 years of diplomatic relations between Finland and Japan.“Kiulu” is a Finnish word referring to a cylindrically shaped bucket, traditionally used in public baths of both countries. As both social nexus and cleansing ritual, public baths are deeply embedded in the cultural landscapes of both Finland and Japan, which was the initial inspiration behind Futatsumata’s Kiulu Bench.
