Presenting Atelier Chair and Chair 611, two universal wooden chairs that appear so different but are yet so similar

Atelier Chair, designed by TAF Studio for the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, and Alvar Aalto’s Chair 611 from 1929, are separated by decades in design history, but united in spirit. At Stockholm Furniture Fair 2019 both are presented side by side in a booth that playfully references the new webbing upholstery on the Aalto classic.

Imitating the webbing: the grid as repeated pattern

Atelier Chair, with its slender proportions and geometric lines, pays homage to the Orchestra Chair by Swedish architect Sven Markelius, itself a tribute to Alvar Aalto’s Chair 611. At Stockholm Furniture Fair, Aalto's first modern chair is presented in a new palette of subtle duo-tone colours developed in collaboration with Dutch colour and textile expert Hella Jongerius.
