Alvar Aalto, 1945

Buy Bench 153B Kivet

Bench 153B Kivet is part of the Artek + Marimekko collection. This limited edition piece brings together Alvar Aalto’s 1945 bench design and Maija Isola’s Kivet (stones) pattern from 1956. The pattern, based on hand-cut circles, was likely inspired by the rough stones surrounding Isola’s atelier home. The Kivet pattern is applied using marquetry on the birch veneer seat.

The pattern is brought to live in a manner that is subtle yet striking

The bench’s solid birch seat and bent birch legs are an example of Aalto’s pioneering L-leg construction, combining strength with the warm organic qualities of natural wood. Crafted from responsibly sourced Finnish birch and made in Finland, this edition highlights the shared commitment of Artek and Marimekko to natural materials and functional design.
