Artek 85

Artek turns 85 on October 15, 2020

Artek was founded in Helsinki in 1935 by four young idealists: Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen, and Nils-Gustav Hahl. Their goal was “to sell furniture and to promote a modern culture of living by exhibitions and other educational means.”

In keeping with the radical spirit of its founders, Artek today remains an innovative player in the world of modern design, developing new products at the intersection of design, architecture, and art.

To celebrate its 85th anniversary in 2020 Artek produced a limited edition of Alvar Aalto’s iconic floor light A810. The light’s leather stand is available in three different colours. The dark red is inspired by the light hanging above the dining table in the Aaltos’ private Helsinki home, the green comes from the AMA500 pendant light hanging in the library of Villa Mairea and the nude leather is a reminiscent of birch wood.
