Artek opens the Archizines exhibition in cooperation with do you read me?! Helsinki Satellite. Archizines celebrates the resurgence of alternative and independent architectural publishing around the world. The touring exhibition curated by Elias Redstone and initiated in collaboration with the Architectural Association, features 80 architecture magazines, fanzines and journals from over twenty countries that provide an alternative to the established architectural press. Edited by architects, artists and students, these publications provide new platforms for commentary, criticism and research into the spaces we inhabit and the practice of architecture. They make an important and often radical addition to architectural discourse and demonstrate a residual love for print matter in the digital age.
The exhibition features titles from the collection alongside video interviews with their creators. Each publication has selected one issue to represent their approach to publishing and they are all available for visitors to read. An accompanying catalogue, published by Bedford Press, explores the relationship between architecture and publishing further through commissioned essays and texts by editors in Europe and North America.
In collaboration with the Finnish Association for Architects SAFA, Artek is organizing the dialogue on Tuesday 11 September at Artek Helsinki Store. The theme of Artek Dialogue #8 goes deeper to the relationship between architecture and journalism, “If the principle of journalism is to understand things; of design and architecture to change things, where is – or is there – a productive spillover between journalistic and design practice to be found?” The moderator is Finnish producer and writer Jenna Sutela. The panelists are architect Anni Vartola (Vartola Viljamaa Architects), curator Elias Redstone, architect Rory Hyde and architect Bryan Boyer from Sitra, The Finnish Innovation Fund.
Archizines exhibition is open from 12 September until 29 September 2012.
11 September, 6pm – 8pm
Discussion starts at 6:30pm
The Archizines exhibition was launched at the Architectural Association, London, in November 2011. The project has since been presented in New York, Milan, Montreal, Barcelona, Berlin, Porto, Paris and Osaka and will continue touring internationally through 2013. The original ARCHIZINES collection is currently being transferred to the National Art Library at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
