ARTEK AT IMM COLOGNE 2014
Artek will kick off 2014 with the 50th anniversary of the Karuselli lounge chair, a new addition to the Artek product range. Designed by Yrjö Kukkapuro in 1964, Karuselli will be relaunched as part of the Artek range at the imm cologne fair in January. From the archives of Alvar Aalto, Artek will reintroduce the side tables 907B and 915, both designed in the beginning of 1930s. The Lukki series by Ilmari Tapiovaara and the award-winning TW003 lamp by Tapio Wirkkala will also be introduced to the German market for the first time. The Rocket and Baby Rocket stools by Eero Aarnio and Tapiovaara’s Lukki and Mademoiselle will be presented in fresh new colour editions.
In addition to the stand, the Café Lounge in Hall 3.2 | F048 will be fully equipped with Artek furniture. The products range from the 2nd Cycle collection of Alvar Aalto tables and chairs, to Harri Koskinen’s lightweight furniture in the lounge area, all lit up by the classic Aalto and Tapio Wirkkala pendants and floor lamps.
On September 6, 2013 Vitra acquired the Finnish company Artek.
A renowned design company founded in 1935 in Finland by architect Alvar Aalto and his wife Aino, art promoter Maire Gullichsen and art historian Nils-Gustav Hahl, Artek was built upon the radical business plan to “sell furniture and to promote a modern culture of habitation by exhibitions and other educational means.” Artek has become one of the most innovative contributors to modern design, building on the heritage of Alvar Aalto.
ARTEK 2ND CYCLE POP-UP CAFÉ AT PLY, HAMBURG 5 – 19 October 2013
Alvar Aalto’s furniture was introduced to the UK through an exhibition at Fortnum & Mason in 1933. Reflecting on the success of the exhibition, Skandium now presents ARTEK TODAY, an exhibition at our Marylebone store, inspiring contemporary living with these classic pieces.
Artek participates in the Habitare fair in Helsinki in two fabulous stands. Debuted at the Milan Furniture Fair, Ilmari Tapiovaara’s cheerfully light Lukki, the metal-frame furniture by Alvar and Aino Aalto, and Tapio Wirkkala’s iconic TW003 pendant are now launched on the Finnish market along with familiar design classics. The relaunch of design icons that have proved to be successful through the decades is a powerful message from Artek on the importance of genuine and sustainable design.
The iconic Stool 60, designed by Alvar Aalto in 1933, turns a venerable 80 this year. Stool 60 is Artek’s best selling product and one of the most famous design classics of all time internationally. Stool 60 represents a crystallization of the values of Artek concerning the importance of technology, art and ethics.
For the anniversary Artek has released many colourful special editions for Stool 60. These are available throughout the year 2013.
A Mondial Home in Berlin
Artek Deutschland GmbH has found a new home in the German capital of Berlin. Nestled in the heart of Europe, the impressive Mondial Home sends a clear signal that Artek is headed in the direction of the broader European market.
Artek opens the Archizines exhibition in cooperation with do you read me?! Helsinki Satellite. Archizines celebrates the resurgence of alternative and independent architectural publishing around the world. The touring exhibition curated by Elias Redstone and initiated in collaboration with the Architectural Association, features 80 architecture magazines, fanzines and journals from over twenty countries that provide an alternative to the established architectural press. Edited by architects, artists and students, these publications provide new platforms for commentary, criticism and research into the spaces we inhabit and the practice of architecture. They make an important and often radical addition to architectural discourse and demonstrate a residual love for print matter in the digital age.
Putting Artek’s values into practice
Artek’s presence at the Habitare Furniture Fair is more diverse and broader than ever before. In addition to its own stand, Artek has partnered in the exhibition architecture of the Ahead! design area and in the Timeline special exhibition. Artek stand 7h31.

Small and Significant
Artek will present the first objects of its new abc Collection at the Maison&Objet fair in Paris in September. The abc Collection consists small objects that integrate naturally into the rest of Artek’s furniture collection. The title is a reference to the alphabet of living: the products serve the small needs of daily life and please the eye, bringing joy to the everyday. The objects in the abc Collection are functional and beautiful that all have their own place. The collection makes available unexpected, different and unique objects as a tribute to small production and art and crafts.
Anniversary Year Opens in Argos Hall at Stockmann
Designed by Alvar Aalto, Stool 60 turns a venerable 80 next year. Stool 60 is the number one seller of Artek products and one of the most famous design products of the world. Artek will celebrate the birthday of the classic in advance at the Argos Hall in the Stockmann department store from 31 August to 16 September. In tribute to the anniversary, the internationally acclaimed artist duo Grönlund-Nisunen have created a massive installation, Stool 60 Composition, right in the middle of the hall.
